them records welcomes back hiroaki iizuka for the its fifth outing. having supplied the the run as the labels first record, here iizuka doubles its play time and track listing length in his stunning voodoo ep. the extra time offered allows iizuka to flex more of his versatile style. them as a label sets out to eschew a techno norm largely made up of a traditional 4 x 4 sound. having come from a london background, the curating of the label gives a nod to the rave sounds of the capital - especially d&b, garage, breakbeat hardcore and grime. that is to say of course along with its characteristic aesthetic of horror and the gothic.
in iizuka them found a common ground: based in hokkaido, japan, iizuka does not share the same london influences, yet shares their base values and thrust. common themes of his sound involve broken and syncopated beats, and a rave energy. this is what lead him to being the first and prime them stable artist. voodoo ep showcases this breadth of iizuka’s style, from tracks that could easily fit into any grime set, such as primitive acid, to the more melodic tones of floating point, in which hiroaki guides them into previously untrodden ground for the imprint.

otherworldly caribbean electronic dance floor cuts! arousing prog-zouk and abstract futurism from the french west indies by synthesist claude rodap, released on vinyl for the first time. huge tip! in the early eighties, a time where french caribbean musicians were searching for their own sound, claude rodap mixed traditional gwo-ka, bel air, biguine with synthetic sounds, resulting in magical, adventurous outcome. recorded in the nineties and in 2000, the dreamy, sensuous three tracks on beletronic are the deliberate result of more than a decade of his experimentation.

during the 1950’s american exotica exponents les baxter, martin denny and arthur lyman fused african and latin rhythms with caribbean and polynesian sounds to evoke the sonic equivalent of a tropical island paradise. this 3rd volume of britxotica examines how their english equivalents fuelled by the popularity of hit musical south pacific, attempted to create the same sun-drenched haitian ambience in rain-soaked, post-war london.

manchester native alex coulton has nurtured a reputation for creating sub-heavy rollers thanks to 12”s for the likes of black acre, livity sound and bloc. with gamma ray burst, the next in his series of releases on london low-end specialists tempa, coulton consolidates his sound to deliver some of the most sparse, rhythmic work of his career. with the record’s title track, coulton weaves from hard-hitting kicks, through to dizzying tribal polyrhythms the whole time maintaining a minimal, space driven atmosphere that remains omnipresent throughout the track’s most intense moments. ‘ground zero’ revels in its spaciousness, allowing reverb to flood into the negative space between flashes of heavyweight techno percussion and saturated ripples of synth while the pulsating kicks that underpin ‘alpha decay’ are punctuated with bleak, discordant bells, rhythmic bass hits and hypnotic filtered percussion. showing his diverse abilities, ‘phase two’ is an exercise in measured restraint, as a cacophony of clicks and hisses come together to disorientate before forming a driving rhythm section before coulton maximises his expansive elements on the fog-tinged ‘ascent’. closing with the steady flowing, brighter-hued melodic work of ‘distant resonance’, alex coulton has created a masterful collection of experimental tech-focused electronica that bewilders, intrigues and will draw the listener in with each play.

avalon emerson’s latest ep, narcissus in retrograde, explores four different styles that shape her distinct voice as a producer and songwriter, from symphonic showstoppers to broken acid. opener “natural impasse“ ferries massive melodic themes through a network of emotive capillaries that’s underpinned by charging drums, while “dystopian daddy“ dons a theatrical flare with costume-changing arpeggiators and digital brass beef that command attention like a stage-hogging space alien diva lip-syncing for new wig money. the b-side takes a more menacing turn with “why does it hurt“, the outright techno achievement of the record, and the snarling closer “groundwater“. ethereal vocals on the former punctuate kicks and growls that sound like they were pulled from a pedal monster’s electric guitar, and on “groundwater“, a crucible of fucked breaks and acid cut a ravine through a bed of off-staccato hats and a sample swamp.
